Challenge
As FirstMile scaled, the Darwin platform’s aging architecture became a bottleneck. It struggled to support critical business operations such as invoice creation, billing management, and payment tracking. Manual workflows slowed productivity, and the platform lacked the flexibility needed to respond to dynamic logistics demands. And without responsive design and updated infrastructure, usability was inconsistent and efficiency suffered. FirstMile needed a complete modernization effort to streamline operations, improve user experience, and lay the groundwork for ongoing innovation.
Solution
Motomtech partnered with FirstMile through a Staff Augmentation engagement, deploying a cross-functional team of 11 experts to modernize the Darwin platform using a four-phase approach.
Phase 1
Conceptualization
Motomtech conducted deep-dive interviews with stakeholders, corporate employees, and potential users. The goal was to understand FirstMile’s business model, operational pain points, and technology limitations. The team also evaluated existing infrastructure and conducted competitive research. The findings were captured in a detailed Software Blueprint, providing clear technical direction and a system-wide vision.
Phase 2
Software Prototype
The team designed user journeys that reflected real-world use cases. A redesigned interface and workflow system were developed through wireframes and compiled into a clickable prototype. This enabled stakeholders to interact with the design before development began and ensured alignment on core functionalities.
Phase 3
Implementation
Motomtech built a robust and scalable architecture using C# for the backend and React for the frontend. The applications were built for responsive access, delivering a consistent experience across desktop, mobile, and iPad. A modern DevOps pipeline ensured seamless deployments and high availability. Once completed, the restructured Darwin platform was successfully deployed and adopted by operational teams.
Phase 4
Maintenance & Enhancement
In this phase, the team continued working closely with FirstMile to support feature rollouts and performance optimization. By keeping an open feedback loop with stakeholders and users, Motomtech ensured the platform stayed aligned with business goals and evolving customer expectations.
