Missed call revenue calculator: what’s your phone costing you?
Three numbers you already know, and one you probably don’t. Put in how many calls you get, what an average job is worth, and roughly how many ring out to voicemail. You get the monthly dollar figure before we ask you for anything.
This calculator needs JavaScript to run. The audit measures the real one, and it’s free.
How much of that you get back depends on your call mix and your hours. The free audit measures it instead of guessing.
This is an estimate built from the four numbers above, not a measurement. Change any of them and the total changes. The only way to know your real figure is to look at your actual call data, and that’s what the free audit does.

A missed call is a missed job.
Nothing here is our number. Every figure in that sentence is one you typed, or a rate you can change. Move any input and watch the total move.
The one thing we assumed for you is the close rate, and it’s sitting right there as an input. If you close better than that, your real losses are bigger.
You get 60 calls a week. About 20% ring out, which is 52 missed calls a month. Of the calls you do answer, about 40% turn into a paying job. So the misses are roughly 20.8 jobs a month you never heard about. At $450 a job, that’s $9,353 a month, or $112,234 a year.
What the number actually means
That figure is an estimate built from three things you eyeballed. It points in the right direction. It isn’t precise. Nobody knows their real missed-call rate off the top of their head, because the calls that never reached you are the ones you have no record of.
The Free Technology Audit measures the real one. We pull your actual call data, look at what happens after hours and during overflow, and hand you a one-page report with your own number on it, plus what the rest of your stack is costing you and what to fix first. It’s free and there’s nothing to install.
So what do you do about it?
Somebody has to answer the phone at 6:47pm. The options are a person you hire, an answering service that takes a message, or an AI front desk that answers, texts back, and books the job into your calendar with real emergencies handed straight to a person.
We do the third one, and we don’t sell it on its own. It comes as part of one monthly subscription, alongside the website, the marketing, the CRM automation, and the reporting and strategy we run twice a month. One flat price, no per-minute billing. Setup is $0, and it’s month-to-month.
Here’s how we work once we’re running it for you.
Based in Salt Lake City or along the Wasatch Front? There’s a local page for that: AI receptionist in Salt Lake City.
If you run an HVAC or plumbing shop and want the software side built rather than run for you, that’s a different job and we do it too. See HVAC software and plumbing software.

Hiring a receptionist vs an answering service vs an AI front desk
| Option | Roughly what it costs | What it actually does |
|---|---|---|
| Hire a receptionist | A full salary, plus payroll taxes and benefits | Answers during business hours only. Sick days, holidays, lunch. |
| Answering service | Usually billed per minute or per call | Takes a message. Somebody still has to call back. |
| AI front desk, run by Motomtech | One flat monthly price, no per-minute billing | Answers voice, text, and chat 24/7, texts back missed calls, books into the calendar, hands emergencies to a person. |
The flat price is the point. Per-minute and per-call pricing means a busy month becomes a surprise bill.
Missed call revenue: common questions
How do you calculate revenue lost to missed calls?
Multiply your weekly call volume by the share of calls that go unanswered to get missed calls per week, then multiply by 4.33 for a monthly figure. Multiply that by the rate at which your answered calls turn into paying work, which gives you the jobs you never heard about. Multiply that by your average job value and you have your monthly missed-call revenue. Motomtech's free missed call revenue calculator runs that arithmetic on your own four inputs and shows every step, so you can change any assumption and see the number move.
How much revenue does a small business lose to missed calls?
It depends entirely on call volume and job value, which is why a single industry figure is close to useless for any individual business. A real share of small-business calls ring out to voicemail, especially after hours and during busy stretches, and average job values in home services swing enormously between a service call and a replacement, which is why the calculator asks you for yours. A $300-a-job shop missing five calls a week is in a completely different position from an $8,000-a-job shop missing the same five. Use your own numbers. Averages belong to somebody else's business.
Is an answering service cheaper than hiring a receptionist?
Usually yes on price, and the gap is the whole reason the comparison gets made. A full-time receptionist is a salaried hire with payroll taxes and benefits on top, covers business hours only, and takes holidays. An answering service is generally billed per minute or per call, so a busy month costs more. The trade-off is what happens to the call: an answering service takes a message and somebody at your shop still has to call back, which reintroduces the delay that lost the job in the first place.
What is an AI receptionist and how is it different from an answering service?
An AI receptionist is software that answers your calls, texts, and website chats around the clock. Unlike an answering service, which records a message for a human to follow up on, an AI receptionist answers the caller's question, books the appointment straight into your calendar, and texts back the callers it could not complete. Real emergencies are handed to a person immediately. It is a safety net over the calls already going to voicemail, not a replacement for the people who work your phones.
Does Motomtech sell the AI receptionist on its own?
No. Motomtech runs the AI front desk as part of one monthly subscription, and it is not available as a standalone product or a self-serve checkout. It ships alongside the website, the marketing, the CRM automation, and reporting twice a month, because a front desk that answers a call but is not wired to your site and your CRM just moves the leak. You pay one flat monthly price with no per-minute or per-call billing. Setup is $0 and billing is month-to-month.
What is the Free Technology Audit and how is it different from a missed call revenue calculator?
A missed call revenue calculator gives you an estimate from three numbers you guessed at. The Free Technology Audit gives you the measured version: we look at your actual call flow, your website, your CRM, and what you are paying every vendor, then hand you a one-page report with your real missed-call figure and what to fix first. It costs nothing, there's nothing to install, and it runs on your own data.
That number was an estimate from your inputs.
